Does the light mount horizontally as well as vertically? I want to put it just under my saddle with a second light just underneath that.

So, not content with blinding those following you, you want to incinerate the poor buggers too ? 
If anything like the other Lunar models the bracketry is designed for a vertical mounting. I've not tried the R2 though. PM me if you are struggling with it though, as I've quite a collection of old brackets - one of which I think is Smart compatible but is at 90 deg to their conventional orientation.

Yes it mounts vertically .
I run one on the seat post and the standard 7 led smart light on each pannier bag as well, seems to do the trick

Vertically on the seat stay for me, with a 1/2 Watt on the seatpost/rackbag depending on if I have the panier on or not 
Am toying with the idea of getting another to stick on the left hand seatstay, not so much for increased visibility but more for the symmetry
