I know this is nothing compared to most of you on here but after picking up my new Specialized Sirrus yesterday I managed 5 miles on the way home and I've done another 5 miles this morning.

After years of no exercise I'm really pleased with this small achievement. I might have a day off it tomorrow to give my legs and arse a chance to recover a bit but I hope this is the start of a lot of cycling for me.

For anyone who is perusing this forum and is thinking of getting a bike again DO IT yes it hurts a bit but it makes you feel great!

great start! It is a wonderful sensation when you get back home and feel good about what you have done.
It doesn't matter how far you ride, 5 miles today will grow to 10 miles tomorrow until you feel comfortable with whatever distance you choose to travel.
Sometimes I go on a ride intending to do just a few miles, usually under 10 miles, and find myself turning into side roads that lead me further away and finish off doing more than i intended, but I love it just the same.
Keep at it and enjoy it!

Well done, the miles don't matter it's all about the enjoyment and the more you enjoy it the more the miles start to add up.

Full marks, great start

Keep it up and the miles will come, but as stated above, enjoyment is far more important than distance. Even if you can ride 100 miles, if you don't enjoy it then there's sod all point in doing it!

Cool. Cycling is a great way to get fit and get from A-B, plus you'll make new friends. It doesn't take long for your bum to get used to a saddle, so don't worry about achey breaky arse.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone.

The fella at the bike shops said he expects to see 500 miles on the bike when it comes back for it's 6 week inspection, I think that might be a bit too much but it's something to aim for!

Excellent - keep it up. and youre right - it sure does make you feel good.

This week has been great! I've been out 6 times since last saturday mostly doing just over five and a half miles apart from tonight when I did just over eleven.

I've been averaging around 10 mph so not exactly amazing but I'm pretty pleased for my 1st week out.

A 5 mile cycle done regularly is enough to improve fitness significantly so you've every reason to be pleased. As you become ready for more, I find it helps to have something to cycle to - a place you want to see, somewhere you have to go that you would otherwise drive to. That really brings home the beauty of cycling for me & keeps me keen to do the next trip.
