Hello all

Do any of you use or has used those 'slime' type inner tubes that claim to repair themselves if you keep rolling along after you get a minor puncture.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00365WXQ0/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_soScub19HGEVP

My Genesis bike comes with Continental Grand Prix Race tyres and while I really like them, they seem to puncutre more easily. So I was thinking of using them with said slime tubes, but I don't know if the whole slime thing is a gimmick.

Or, should I just buy some Gatorskin tyres and use them all year round instead? Not sure what the current Grand Prix tyres will be like during the winter.

Any opinions would be much appreciated.

Cheers!

I tried them when I began cycling & always had punctures. The slime would go everywhere but never seemed to harden & plug the hole up.
I gave up with them got some puncture "proof" tyres & to date have only had 2 punctures.

I can't be of any use on choosing tyres for you but I run Schwable Marathon+ all year round.

Never thought of using them. I too have gone for fairy proof tyres. What happens to the slime in the tube whilst you're riding before deflationary incident. Does it slosh about. What about when letting air out when changing tyres?

I use them on my commuter, they work as advertised. The only downside is they're a little heavy compared to a regular tube, but to me its.worth the weight penalty to guarantee my arrival at work.

I used Scwalbe and Conti armoured tyres before, and they're even heavier and still let the odd puncture sneak through.

Although I didnt know which specific self repair tyres they were, I had a bike (hybrid) with them on. Brilliant, self repairing in seconds. Downside...where they did self repair, you could feel a lumpiness in the tyre every revolution..thump thimp thump thump...all the time. I always thought that'd be real annoying on roadbike tyres.
Personally, and I hope im not tempting fate...good puncture resistant tyres and most important of all, good road positioning, OUT of the gutters etc, will vastly decrease the amount of punctures you get. Even when I commuted heavily, I rarely got punctures with this method. Its not fool proof...I can remember rare occasions when I got two in a week, but then go many many months without one.

Heavy, sluggish, take the feel away from the tyre, you get horrible bouncing when your wheel rotates, and dangerous in my opinion, yes they seal but your still left with debris in the tyre, i used them once in the winter and when i removed my schwable lugano tyre the tube had loads of thorns sticking out of it. And id been doing speeds up to 50mph, it cant be safe.

In a word...cr*p!

They work for a while but then the slime ends up coming out of the tube every time you open up the valves to pump up tyres. It leaves a crusty residue around the valve which resembles snot. Also, it is advised that you spin the wheel for a few minutes, to allow the slime to be distributed evenly around the tube before setting off on a ride. Just get some decent tubes and tyres with some p******e protection.

You're supposed to park the bike with the valves in the 12 o'clock position for an hour or so, then you avoid green gunk in your valve.

I use them on the commuter as the method that most reliably gets me to work. But they aren't perfect and I don't run them in any of my other bikeys.

Used them once , come the time i needed to up the pressure in the tyres and all hell broke loose when i opened the presta valve , never touched then since, i always carry two spare tubes now!

Spare tubes are lighter than slime, and less messy. Some mass merchandise stores in the States, that is all you can get, unless you get presta valve tubes. My spare tubes are prestas, because my slime tubes failed at the valve. They came with the scrounged wheel set, so I was no money out, but it shows the obvious drawbacks to these tubes. Infrequent street sweeping means I often have to use farther out road position than I otherwise would, but bicycle lanes are starting to make their appearance in town here. The great drawback I see with slime tubes is that they really do not patch very well when they get a large puncture, they just make a mess.

These people may be students, from Gamma Phi Circus,an entirely non-animal act circus the University puts on. Bloomington used to be winter quarters for several trapeze acts of the circus, and there are many collections of circus posters and artifacts at the University Library, as well as the circus. A noted collector of circus memorabilia lives here as well. http://gammaphicircus.illinoisstate.edu
