On my 15mile commute home yesterday I thought the rear wheel 'felt a bit funny'. Rode ok though.
Tonight I stripped the cassette off to give it and the chain a good clean. While doing that I noticed that (excuse my terminology)
A) the freehub (splined bit that the cogs slot onto) was fine
B) the axle (bit that the quick release skewer goes through, silver bit in the pic below) was able to rotate awkwardly independently of the freehub and feels like it's on a ratchet. Kind of like the cassette lockring feels when you tighten it up if that makes sense.
C) with the wheel back on the bike there is a small amount of play when moving the circumference of the wheel from side to side. Millimetres at most but enough to feel a slight clunk
D) with the bike upside down and spinning the wheel as fast as possible there's an oscillation, enough to wobble the frame.
The bike feels solid enough when ridden. On a scale of "pah no worries" to "omfg Mick don't ride it until an LBS has looked at the wheel" how seriously should I take this?
