My conti tyres have wear holes but other tyres do not, in that case I usually go with when they go thread bare or I start getting repeated p'tures and I tend to be a little more cautious when it comes to the front tyre.

+ 1 re wear holes , they also loose a bit of stiffness with age

When I had them on an upright bike rear developed a flatter area where the most contact is made. I then changed both tyres. When I took the rear one off there was precious little rubber left in the centre of the rear tyre.
