Had planned to do the Bealach Beag next year but it is the day before the Etape Caledonia so going to have to give it a miss. Might do the Mor, but i find it difficult planning for events that far in advance

One of my friends who going up with me to the Cairngorms sportive is also doing his first :-)

50 or 100miler?

I did the final section to the ski station 2 weeks ago, into a biting headwind, with snow on the hill. I suspect the weather will be better come the event, but the thought of climbing that hill at the end of a 100miler.........ouch!

The 100. Its a bit of a con, the Cairgorm 100, its only 96 miles so he'll have no excuse ;)

I did the Cairngorm sportive a few years back (it was my second "event") and remember it as well organised and a good route - not that hilly in fact. There's a short steep climb at Bridge of Brown on the Tomintoul road before a nice section on Strathspey and then a long steady climb up Dava Moor.
The final climb is very tough early on then you turn a corner and it eases and you start to fly up. I changed up to the big ring toward the top for a sprint finish and my chain fell off!
The worst bit was the early morning starting descent from the ski station which was fogbound and forced a careful descent.

A ride well worth doing. The post event food was pretty insubstantial and a pit stop at Pitlochry was required on the way home to refuel.

You could always do it fixed this time, Seamab

:surrender:
Right enough i'd probably go up the steepest bits quicker by pushing the bike.
Doubt i'd do this one again - pastures new and all that. My one fixed hilly Audax experience was enough to teach me not to repeat the experiment.
