I'm about to buy my first set of bib tights, but I'm not sure what size to order. I'm a fat b*st*rd with short legs, so should I choose the size to suit my height (5'9"), and hope that they're stretchy enough to accommodate my paunch, or my waist size (34"), and hope I don't have to tie knots in the shoulder straps?

You advice is welcome.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
My advice? You are not a fat bastard. 34" at 5'9" is perfectly normal.

Hope this helps.

Depends on what ones you're looking at, apparently Assos are most race fit shorts so are tighter from what I've heard and bib shorts like DHB earnly (which I have) are more loose. The ones I have are loose at the end but I'm determined to fix that.

I'd go for height, and if there too tight send them back and try a larger size.

I am a similarly athletic shape with a full aerobelly and same height, found I needed dhb's bibs for the equivelent of a 6'1" person, 2 sizes larger than my height, and 1 size larger than my waist would predict! As a consequesnce they're a tad long in the leg, but not too worried about that. Often best to order 2 sizes and send the one back that doesn't fit.

I am 5' 8", 38" waist and have Assos bib tights and they are very slightly too long. As they stretch pretty well you might get away with a medium as Assos seem to sell by height! The one's I have a padded insert and "stirrup" thingies for your feet.

You should really try some on at a LBS.
