The lovely Helen aka SWMBO would like some sort of handlebar mounted shifter in place of the downtube non-indexed one on the new old bike. It has a shimano bolt-on rear mech and a six speed freewheel.

Any pitfalls I should watch out for or will any indexed or non-indexed six speed flat bar shifter do the job?

With downtube non-indexed presumably bike is quite old? If so it is worth checking if the rear mech is SIS compatible or not or it might not index satisfactorily. Similarly if it has triple up front it is necessary to check what front mech is there currently.

Flat bar shifters generally don't fit on drop bars apart from some rare exceptions. For flat bar bikes and new these are close to the best quality money can buy currently I suspect.

Older than an old thing, but surprising nice none the less.

Flat bars are present and it is an SIS mech. Single ring up front.

Want to keep the current brake levers.
