Sit bones, how to measure them?

I think I might need a different saddle and I've heard it said on this forum that to accurately size yourself a saddle you need to measure your sit bones. Not to put to fine a point on it, how does one achieve that?
I can feel where they are if I forage about in me nethers, but to accurately measure them without the use of, say, calipers, which involves a level of proximity combining sharp pointy things and the aforementioned nethers I don't even want to think about! xx(
Any advice, tips etc?

most local bikes shops can do it, especially if they sell Bontraguer or Specialized saddles. i've had it done on more than one occasion.

it basically involves sitting on a pad with your feet up, and when you get off the pad, there are two dents where your pelvic sit bones are. they measure across for the correct size saddle.

believe me, an inch makes all the difference!

You can do this easily by sitting on a sheet of aluminium kitchen foil on a carpeted stair
and approximating your riding position with feet of the ground.
This will leave an impression of your behind er behind.
Measure across the deepest indentations-where your sit bones have sat
should be between 100-160 mm

hope this helps
