just a quick question, which of the SIS energy products is best for a commuter (20 miles a day) - not tried any before and i am a bit confused, i have read that people make up mixes but i am happy to give one of these a try for a few weeks, also how may drinks would a 500g bottle make?

cheers

Go - Electrolyte mix for replacing lost salts etc. Particularly useful in warm weather when you sweat more.
PSP22 - Carbohydrate with electrolytes, good for long distances (over 30 miles).
Rego - Protein recovery drink, no use while on the bike but good afterwards.

20 miles a day (I assume 10 miles in the morning, 10 miles in the evening), I would just be using water with a bit of squash providing you are eating sensibly/well during the day to replace some of what you have burnt on the ride.

You would generally use about 60g/70g per bottle, so 500g would make about 7 x 700ml bottles.

The branded powders (like SIS) can get expensive quickly, have a look at this thread which tells you how to home brew for about 25% of the cost.

For a 10 mile each-way commute, all you need is water! Having said that, I like to use 2/3 water to 1/3 orange juice.

I use maltodextrin powder on rides over 25 miles or so. I put 3 scoops of powder in a 750 mL bottle and I think the scoop holds 20 g so that is 60 g per 750 mL. 500 g of powder would make about eight 750 mL bottles or twelve 500 mL bottles.

You can get maltodextrin powder and other useful stuff like whey powder really cheap from MyProtein - 5 kg for £12.49 - a real bargain!

ta for replies, may just spice up my water with some juice.... wife always moaning that i don't drink enough so thought some sort of energy boost may help....

will also sort out 3 jam butties!!!

Like Tynan says Energy drinks are likely to be a waste for a commute. Having said that if you want to liven up your bottle you could try a home made drink a lot cheaper and more palatable too; I found this recipe and have used it a few times (I usually make just one 750mm bottle so I have the ingredients).

I use 1/3 juice the rest water for more or less any activity.
As long as you eat sensibly you dont really need anything more for commuting, having said that I'm a tightwad all the powders/formulas can get expensive quickley.

I usually have a half pint of fruit smoothie before my morning commute(45mins), water on the bike. A banana half an hour before the ride home, water again.

If I'm going out for longer I'll use SiS Go - excellent for rides up to 3hrs. More than 3hrs I use High5 4:1 energy drink. I find PSP too bloating for my belly - even for carbo-loading. One of my pals mixes it 50/50 with Go and it serves him well, but even this is too much for me.

Try a sachet out. I love the lime flavour - you should find that you'll have more energy at the end of your ride, though an apple or two before leaving work will have a similar effect.
