What level of fitness do you need to sit in a car turn a wheel and press some pedals?. Granted you have to have quick reflexes and co ordination but surely not the same fitness level as a pro cyclist?

Racing drivers have a high level of all round fitness, they always did well in those multi sport challenges that were a feature on TV in the sixties and seventies (Incidently, the worst they ever had on was Tour de France winner Joop Zotemelk. Presenter David Vine used to laugh about his performance). Driving a car at race speeds puts a tremendous strain on the body in coping with the G forces. Look at the size of a GP drivers neck, for example.

Read Damon Hill's excellent autobiography and you'll find out just how strong and fit you need to be to race at the top levels of motorsport.

Some drivers can lose up to 3Kg in sweat during a double 'stint', approx 1hr 40m. The cars Hoy drives have aircon, but the cockpit can be up to 20c above the outside air. temp, add to that they wear a triple layer Nomax race suit & gloves.

Beat me to it - I was going to say that Jenson Button does triathlons for fun inbetween races, which should give some idea of how fit they need to be.
