Got to replace the rear derailleur gear cable as the previous length was too short for the new derailleur cable. I'm using simplex retrofriction downtube shifters, and the last set of gear cables I had required sanding down to fit.

I've read elsewhere that campag cables might fit, anyone got any experience with this?

Try using 'dedicated' gear cable instead of 'universal' gear/brake outer if the outer is too big (its slightly slimmer) but if its the nipple that needs filing to fit in the lever then that is quite common (they do not make them to as tight a tolerance as cables of old and often have 'mould lines' where the nipple has been manufactured)

Yeah that's the problem, I was hoping to avoid an afternoon with sandpaper and a file tbh, I was using shimano ones before, and they work fine, it's just the recess is too small for them.

Clarks (Stainless) are a better cable than Shimano (overpriced). Mind you I'd be tempted to drill out the recess but then I do have access to drills in 0.1 mm increments (mate of mine is a precision engineer)

I'm gonna have to try more Clarks stuff. I know the brake pads used to be decent.

Yeah I was thinking about that, long term it may well be the better solution, now I'm getting used to the DT shifters, I'm starting to like them, anything that makes them easier to use might be worth it. Don't have access to precision tools though unfortunately.

Ok, so problem solved.

I bought a set of clarks universal gear cables. Perfect fit, don't need to file, or drill out anything. Best thing, less than £3 from halfords
