So about two months ago I was knocked off my bike and gained a grade 3 separation. Seemed to be healing well, most of my range of movement was back, no pain, just weakness which my physio said he would work on with me.

Saw my consultant on Tuesday and he said he thought my shoulder was strong enough to get back to training so I did, nothing major, a couple of sessions on the turbo and a jog yesterday.

Today my shoulder has started doing the most horrendous grinding when rotating my arm and my clavicle has started moving again. I feel like an idiot. I really don't want surgery and i'm really worried that I've f*cked it up. It doesn't hurt but the grinding is not a good sign right? I've had a really good weekend up to now and I just feel so worried and upset

Is a separation another way of saying dislocated?

I never had a grade on mine but it was a traumatic dislocation with a Hill Sach fracture, I went private and had two Chiropractor's appointments a week and a Physio the main work was getting the muscles to sit back in the right location and stay there and to work on the scar tissue on the bones as that was causing pain. Sound like yours might be the same?

About me? Are you sure

No, the ligaments attaching my clavicle to the AC joint are totally gone so I've got a weak shoulder and a displacement of the end of the clavicle. Yours sounds a bit more serious?

I was kinda hoping for some reassurance from someone, I understand this is a fairly common injury in bike accidents so I thought this might be a good place to get it. I expect I'm not going to sleep well tonight and will be ringing the gp in the morning.

Ice it. take some ibuprofen. I'd contact the physio rather than GP (private physio presumably?)

No its NHS. My physio is on holiday for 3 weeks otherwise I'd be seeing them this week anyway. I might try and give the department a call though.

Are you claiming for the accident? If so, the solicitor should arrange private physio for you

Definitely call, they'll have your notes, you should be able to see someone else hopefully

Vertical movements are fine, I just tried some of the exercises my physio gave me before I saw your comment! No grinding at all from those. It seems to be movements involving some sort of rotation that are the issue

I hope so. Or at least give me some advice until they can squeeze me in. I might wear my sling tomorrow to remind myself to be careful. Yeah, I've got a claim going in. I'm happy with the physio so far, it's just really bad timing that my man is on holiday when I'd normally be seeing him every week.

The lifting will help to rebuild the muscles/tendons
Non union fracture of left collarbone, ok now after a few years but lots of now painless graunching on rotation and too close to the end to pin.

I thought I'd got off relatively lightly from this injury until now. Oh well.

The physio exercises are mainly to correct my shoulderblade misalignment, I'm not yet at the stage of being advised to lift anything remotely heavy though I think that's coming. Or it was before I got overenthusiastic.

I'm sorry, but grinding isn't good. I think mine was a low grade strain of my ACL following getting knocked off, but I needed surgery on it, and that took 2 years to get there. It's great now though, 3 years AFTER surgery. Full recovery from surgery - i.e. no pain when exercising, took 18 months.

I'd recommend getting surgery in this case. What have they said about the ligaments - reattachment ?

Ugh. That's pretty much what I expected people to say. Wish it wasn't so!

Surgery is always an option but my consultant hadn't recommended it in terms of function as it would have been mostly cosmetic. But that was when my clavicle seemed pretty well stuck down. I'm not sure what the surgery would be, I know there's a couple of options at least from what I've read. I hadn't really discussed it in any depth as i considered surgery a last resort really.

Going to pester the physio department again tomorrow.

Hi @Sods_Laur After having an off a week and a half ago, I was searching AC/shoulder separations on here and came across your thread. Hope I'm not bringing up old demons but was wondering how you were getting on? To be honest, I was so worried about missing my holiday (it happened a couple of days before) I didn't ask as many questions as I should have but I have at least been referred to a specialist.

Not heard from Sods for a while. Miy left shoulder is still fine ! Landed on my right sholder 7 weeks ago - fortunately my helmet and my ribs (broke) took the impact. Just about recovered on the ribs front.
