should i be able to pedal backwards on road bike?

hi

whenever i pedal back wards to re adjust leg positiioning or something when riding my chain sometimes comes off the front ring?
are my derailers off or should you not pedal backwards on a road bike,

comapct giant defy 5 by the way

Something is wrong, you should be able to pedal backwards fine. Only things I can think of: worn chain, worn chainrings, derailleurs need adjustment.

probably the draillers as the bike is only 4 months old, i seem to have a lot of trouble with my deraillers, i have taken it to my LBS once for a full gear / derailler adjustment, but i think englands bumpy roads are moving it slightly out of position

On new bikes, the cables stretch. This means the once in tune gearing will now be slightly out. You can tighten the derailleur cable by screwing the barrel adjuster out (righty tighty lefty loosey). Plenty of youtube videos as well
