I use shimano A520 pedals, which I like because they are fairly braod which in my mind leads to more confort etc. (this is on my 'audax' type bike).
I've been using th
ese with Specialized Sonama (velcro fastening) which are cheap, but have been good and comfortable. But they're a couple or three years old and wearing out. They're also cold in winter.

I've been looking and am thinking that I quite like specialized bg sport or the northwave lizard. Both MTB shoes with recessed cleats and I'm wondering if the recessed cleat will fit with the a520 pedal.

Does anybody use a combination like this that might be able to advise?

Yes, I use the Shimano PD-A530 (which is almost the same), with Specialized Sonama's.

Basically you can use any MTB shoe with recessed cleats and those pedal, it is a good choice of pedal...

I use Specialized BG Pro (the spd version) shoes with A520s and they are a good match. The tread aligns very snugly with the pedal edges, giving a wide support platform.

I used to have Tahos but the cleats were less recessed, causing them to rock slightly on the pedal, and the sole flexed. This gave me painful hotspots.

I think the BG sport has the same tread pattern and spd depth as the Bg Pro.
