Anyone remember
these:
They were branded as Jacques Anquetil plates with extended bases to spread the load. I knew a number of people who used them but never adopted them myself — the extensions always seemed to be coming adrift and just looked like dead weight to me.
For a considerable time I used shoe-plates made of hard black rubber. They were remarkably firm and effective and avoided all the scraping and scuffing that went with metal plates. Also, being rubber, they wore out really slowly and retained a good firm grip.
In the matter of toe-straps, Alfredo Binda toe-straps were absolutely essential. Tough as mammoth skin. I never broke a Binda strap, although I once broke a Binda buckle. Alongside Binda straps any other straps just felt like bacon rind ready for the compost heap.
