Whilst I have (and will) go into a bike shop to get advice and try on several pairs, would welcome any guidance on what to look out for in getting a good fit for my first SPD shoes (for use on a road bike, but want MTB/touring shoes with recessed cleat for walkability). I've already tried on a few and have struggled to find anything that'll fit - they're either too small or too big, or else cut into my ankles. I settled on a pair of Shimano MO76s on Fri that seemed to be the best fit of the several pairs I tried, but after trying them on at home on one foot the shoe feels a bit too narrow. My problem is that I've heard and read so much advice (they should be really tight, allow so room for when your foot heats up....) that I'm now getting paranoid. I appreciate only I can decide what feels 'right' but any pointers would be welcome so I'm better informed when I go back to the shop (although they've been pretty helpful and patient!) Ideally wanted to pay around £70 but having pretty much exhausted all the models in that range, resigned to paying a little more if that gets the right shoe.

A lot of people have one foot slightly larger than the other - usually sorted by getting shoes to fit the larger foot and either padding the other or doubling up in the socks dept.

Some major brands do half sizes so it might be worth looking out for these.

Always go off what/how they fit you. Quite often, different brands are smaller/larger/narrower/wider.....

I take 42 shoes/trainers, but anything from 42 to 44 in cycling shoes depending upon manufacturer.

Just bought a pair of those mo76's from Wiggle when they had the £10 off.I take a 44 normal shoe so ordered 45's and they fit fine even with a pair of thickish socks on,and as they are going to be my summer shoes should be even better with normal socks.

Many thanks for the replies. After trips to both shops local to work and home, and to a couple of branches of Evans, I'm still searching after trying Shimano, Specialized, Bontrager, Mavic.....all too tight and pinching my toes on my larger foot or far too big if I step up a size (even with thick socks etc.) Bontrager were the exception, but really uncomfortable design on the arch which was worse than the toe pinching! Been told to try Northwave as they can come in slightly wider, but can't find anyone I have access to who stocks them or can get any in my size for me to try. In fairness, shops really helpful in terms of advising me that the shoes don't fit, but I'm stuck as exhausted all the options I have access to try on.

From a search through the archives on here and on the web generally, it seems that I may struggle if it's width I'm looking for (unless I want to pay loads or compromise and go for the best of a bad fitting bunch - Specialized MTB Comps which were a bit better than the others).
