My birthday yesterday and I was given a pair of Shimano shoes. They are SPD-SL shoes. My bike has SPD pedals. I have not bought the cleats for the shoes. Can I use these SPD-SL shoes with SPD pedals?

Unless the shoes have 2 bolt fittings in addition to the 3 bolt SPD-SL fittings, you cannot use them with SPDs.

Did you buy your bike used? I ask because normally when you buy pedals they come with cleats.

You probably have a pair of R085's which have three screw holes in - as MM says these are designed to take only Shimano spd-sl cleats and not spd cleats - take them back or get a spd-sl pedal system (eBay sellers sell the basic models for £30 ish inc cleats)
