Well my 105 5701 worked with my 9sp setup, so I would imagine so, most RD are dumb and its the shifters that control the amount of shift, which is why you can't actually re-index, the 9sp chain is a little wider outside plates internally its the same, if I remember right.

Shimano rear mechs, shifters and cassettes are all compatible, except for 10 speed MTB rear mechs which need 10 speed MTB shifters.
But avoid anything called Dyna-Sys and you'll be fine. I'm running 10 speed 105 STIs with a 10 speed SRAM 11-32 cassette, 105 mechs and a 9 speed Sora compact chainset. No problems at all.

I'm running 10 speed 105 STIs with a 10 speed SRAM 11-32 cassette (and 12-27),10spd 105 rear mech, 105 10spd chain, 9 spd Tiagra front mech & Tiagra 9spd triple chainset. No problems here
