I've got a Specialized Tarmac Sport with Shimano 105 STi levers and DT Axis 1.0 brakes which I think are only available as part of a bike rather than on the open market. My wife's road bike (Specialized Dolce) has got some cheap dual pivot brakes and the plating on the spring and other exposed metal has corroded quite badly after one winter of riding, to be expected on budget calipers I suppose.

I am thinking about buying some Shimano 105 calipers (£50 from Ribble) to put on my Tarmac which gives me an almost full 105 group set apart from the crank, and then swapping the DT Axis brakes on to my wifes bike, basically an upgrade for both bikes. Her brake blocks need replacing anyway as they are worn right down so new cartridges would be £20, so in my mind I can spend another £30 and upgrade both bikes in one hit.

So my question is about Super SLR, as the Shimano 105 calipers specify they must be used with Super SLR levers; no problem on my bike as it has 105 shifters. My wife's bike has Shimano 2300 STI levers, so can I pair these with the DT Axis 1.0 calipers (which I am guessing are also Super SLR), will there be some weird pull ratio going on? Or is the Super SLR stuff just a bit of marketing that makes little/no difference in the real world?

Sorry that's all a bit detailed but if anyone knows the answer that would be great :-)

Can't you drop one of the wheels out of each bike then operate the brake levers fully and measure how much cable is pulled.

You're quite right, I could! But I thought I would ask if anyone had experience of mixing up components with the Super SLR kit. I am expecting it will probably just work but would be interested to hear if anyone has actually done it.

Update: so I have just measured the pull on each cable. The Shimano 105 (5700) lever pulls 17mm of cable and the Shimano 2300 lever pulls 14mm of cable, so they are clearly different. But is this 4mm difference enough to prevent the SLR compatible calipers working with the Shimano 2300 levers?
