Been having a problem with the rear gear shifter, so I opened it up to have a look and this bit feel out (not sure what it's called):

This is the inside of the Lever:

I've tried putting the bit that fell out back in, in a number of different ways, but it's only allowing 2 shifts (the rear is 7 speed).

Does anyone know the correct way to install that bit?

Thanks.

Given you have 7 cogs at the back, it sounds like you have an oldish shifter. Nevertheless if you can provide the model serial number there is a chance I might be able to dig up an exploded diagram for you.

There doesn't seem to be a serial number on it. On the front of it, it says Shimano 8 Speed.

The bike is a Raleigh Royal Touring Bike 2009. The description says that they are Sora STI Levers.

I've looked through the Shimano technical documents and didn't find anything that matches.

Thanks

STI levers are basically a replacement job, no repair possible.

There are no spares available except by cannibalising other levers, and it's such a slow and fiddly job to strip them down and rebuild them that nobody else is going to do it at bike shop labour rates.

Someone's notes for Ultegra/Dura Ace STI here (follow "next" at the bottom of the page)

This is the exploded diagram of a Sora sti unit. However don't think it shows much in the main lever assembly (unit 1).

This contains some sora sti servicing info and photos, but the component might not be the same as yours since there must have been numerous incarnations with the same name over the years. Fwiw conventional wisdom is that Shimano sti's should be sent back for repair under warranty (2 years for sora I think) whenever possible as they are not designed to be rebuilt by users, complicated and parts are scarce.
