shimano/sram wheel compatability?

Not actually a question for me but a lad I work with.

He's looking to upgrade his wheels, he currently has mavic cxp 22 rims and a SRAM Apex groupset, he asked for a bit of advice and I told him I have shimano C24 RS80 wheels with a 105 group and find them very good.

However I am unsure if he can just buy these and simply fit his SRAM Cassette straight on?

Yes, Shimano and SRAM is cross compatible. In fact I would recommend anyone riding Shimano groupsets go out and buy a SRAM cassette next time, IME they are much better for the longevity of lightweight aluminium freehub bodies.
