I have got a Shimano Sora 9 speed STI shifter on my bike. It has always worked faultlessly but this week it jammed so I was unable to change up or down. Both of the up and downshift levers have full travel but it is like the pawls inside are not engaging to allow the cable to be pulled somehow.

I have removed the gear and brake cable to allow the shifter to move freely and removed the rubber hood and also some of the plastic innards to reveal the workings of the mech. I gave it a liberal soaking in WD40 to try and rinse out any hardened grease or gunge that had built up since the bike was new 3 years ago but it looked pretty clean in there already. It has now freed up a little and I can sometimes get it to change in to a lower gear but only if the brake lever is pulled all the way back to the bars which is obviously not very practical. The up shift in to a higher gear by using the thumb shifter works fine now.

Is this a sign that the shifter is knackered or does it need some more cleaning out (i've already used half a can of WD40 on it)?

There is an 8mm(?) nut at the front of the shifter, I am wondering if play has developed in the unit as it has got older and if I can tigthen the nut? I am very wary of taking any more of it apart as I can imagine that something will fly out across the room if I do!

Any ideas anyone?
