Looking at an upgrade on daughters bike. She has Shimano ST-2200 shifters (8 speed); can I use any shimano front and rear dérailleur combination with these shifters, specifically looking at replacing with a second hand 9 speed 105 set-up?

No those shifters won't work with all Shimano front and rear derailleurs, but yes they should work fine with 9 speed 105 components.

They'll work with practically-all Shimano F&R mechs, with the exception of 10speed MTB rear mechs and most MTB front mechs.

The mechs don't have to be the same 'number of speeds' - what must match are the shifters and the cassette.

So you could run Shimano 8sp, 9sp or 10sp mechs and the 9sp Shimano 5500 you're considering will be fine.

Thanks for the replies, upgrade ordered, hopefully a happy daughter.

It really is so useful having a forum like this to rely on for a fast informative response, especially living in France where my French just isn't sufficient to pose questions like this locally.
