Hi...Can some one help me?....Just bought on ebay a Dura-Ace rear mech...for £19...i asked the seller...7, 8 or 9 speed and his reply was 8 but could work on 9...fair enough...then i find when i get it is a a pre 1997...RD-7400...which according to Velobase is a 6 speed unit......So can i use it in either a 7 or 8 speed set up?....I have searched the net and cannot get a definitive answer...I have looked up Sheldon Brown too....If yes....what shifters will i need to get...will it have to be DA or can i use other Shimano shifters.......or has the seller misled me?...Should i just relist it on ebay......cheers....Leon

This article suggests that your mech is designed for Shimano 9 Speed Shifters on an 8 Speed cassette.

Thanks for the link....I follow that [just].....but does it mean ANY shimano 9 shifter...or a Dura-Ace 9 speed shifter....What about a DA 7 speed shifter and a 7 speed cassette?...would that index ok?......wish i did not buy it now!!

You rear mech will work fine with any shimano shifter.
The rear mech does what it is told by the shifter, so it will shift into whatever position its told.
AS for chains, and what cassettes. I would reckon it would work with anything up to 9 speed.

It is 20 year old technology so whilst it still very good, modern mechs have got the same tech and have improved from there.
