Anyone know where to get the tool to replace studs on Shimano MTB shoes? I can only find it for £15 with 4 new studs, which is quite expensive and I don't need spares.

Also, is it possible to put blanking bolts in the holes to have them studless?

The shoes in question are M161s but I'm assuming Shimano run a standard size on such things.

local sports shop. stud spanner. same as they use for football and rugby. pair of pliers. Be prepared to the socket in the sole to be ripped out if the stud is siezed. If you can take the insole at and get some gt45 in the back of the threaded stud socket you will make life easier.

Cheers Greg, I'll have a go. They're brand new so seizing shouldn't be an issue, hoping the blanking bolts from my DHB shoes will fill the gaps.

sorry assumed they were old and in need of replacement. if new fangled doodads my advice may not be appropriate.

you can leave the studs off without blanking, little harm will come. I used to pack the stud holes with vaseline, and just leave them, back, way back, in my mtb xc racing days.

I emailed Merlin who I bought them off and they said the same. Will see if my DHB stud remover™ will do the trick. They'll mostly be used on road so studs all the time just make walking harder.
