Hi, just servicing my bike ahead of the Dragon Ride and found a long list of issues with my bike.

One of which is that my Shimano Hub wobbles!

Running some Miche Excite 700c's with Shimano HG 9 speed cassette.

I noticed alot of play with the cassette, so took the rings off to have a look at the hub, lots of lateral movement.

Can't work out how to tighten, and does not seem to be influenced by the bearings and inner bearings etc.

I have put it all back together as I need the bike, and the play is not that big a deal, its just that my old wheels hub has no play at all.

Other bike faults were, orange water coming out of bottom bracket - removed, cleaned and re-greased.
Rear mech not going to lowest gear, sorted
Loose spoke on back wheel, sported

It can be a loose freehub lockscrew / hollow fixing bolt. If so it depends on which hub model you have, but for the majority of them (key exceptions being relatively recent Ultegra and above for road hubs) you have to take the axle and ball bearings out, insert a 10mm allen key into the drive side and tighten.

If the hollow bolt is not loose and yet the freehub can move in relation to the hub shell then the tiny ball bearings within the freehub (can't be accessed easily and non-serviceable) are worn, then you need to replace the freehub, needing no other tool than the same allen key.

Pic below might give you a better idea of what I am talking about.

I can't get the freehub off, I turn the 10mm allen key counterclockwise and there is no movement, I don't want to force it.

It won't budge

Assuming the allen key is the right size (I believe some freehubs are 11mm, but these are rare. I could be wrong on this though), give it some welly apply more force. With the wheel out of the bike, rest the rim on the ground. Insert the allen key such that your undoing movement allows you to push the allen key downwards.

The allen key fits well. I will give it some welly later.
