I have been looking at getting a new freehub for my spares box. I have a FH-RM35 centre lock hub for disc brakes. It is on a Trek FX 7.2 Disc. I have been looking for FH-RM35 freehubs which seem to be as rare as £5 notes in my wallet. Lots of places list the freehub but then pop up with an out of stock message. I don't know if that's because they are being discontinued or because they are very popular.

I have read on some forums that any Shimano 8 speed freehub will do which seems a bit strange to me. If there is so much interchangeability why are there so many models at so many different price points? It would be good if I could obtain a more common unit.

They cost about the same as a new hub. So if I was you I'd buy a new hub knowing that I have the bearings and axle as a spare. Just remove freehub from new to old hub.

Pretty cheap here (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230915971619). Thanks to RecordAceFromNew for the original link!

After a quick google through tech docs -your problem is that the RM models are a non-series production. A look through that last link shows that the RM30's might not be compatible.

Even the Shimano tech docs don't seem to acknowledge the RM35

It's usually the seal that needs a bit of modification - but it may be something more fundamental like the axle diameter etc.

Can you take the wheel to the LBS and ask them to try a standard shimano freehub?

Thanks for the advice so far.
After reading the list of exceptions in Herzog's link there is some doubt whether it would be compatible.
There is no rush for this. The freehub on the bike is working fine but as I am stepping up my mileage I wanted a spare to hand just in case. Perhaps I will give the Trek dealer from whom I bought the bike a ring tomorrow and see what he has to say.

Hi Compo, Had you any luck finding this freehub anywhere? I need one and cannot find them anywhere.

Yes, eventually.

If it is the RM35 freehub you need this may be your lucky day. I am replacing my rear wheel, hopefully the new wheel will be here tomorrow or Wednesday, so as long as the new wheel doesn't use the same RM35 freehub (highly unlikely) I will have the new freehub I bought, which has never been used and is still in it's original packaging, and the one on the wheel is still in perfect working order and can be removed. I will confirm once I have checked the new wheel.
