I am running a Shimano FHM475 rear hub with the stock freehub.

Recently I have noticed that there is a lot of chatter coming from the rear pn anything other than smooth ground. I suspected a loose chain but removing a few links didn't help.

Yesterday I put a different wheel in and the noise was gone. Examination of the first wheel shows that there is a few mm of lateral /up down float movement on the cassette that seems to be coming from the freehub. wheel bearings seem fine and there is no rock.

Cassette lock ring is tight.

I can't say I've ever experienced this before usually my freehub fail when they fail to engage. Is this likely to be a freehub issue that a new body will fix?

Loch side.
Shimano freehubs do fail as you suspect, but also in other ways. I've seem them crack and I've seen the bearing cups collapse inwards, all creating the symptons you describe.
Remove the cassette and wiggle it a big for a better look.
Freehub bodies from Shimano are cheap and readily available.
