Advice please, im fitting a ten speed 11-36 cassette on my Dawes 201 [1 x] and unsure whether i need a long or medium cage Deore M6000 derailleur. I would guess the medium but dont understand some of the terminology ie max low, max teeth difference. Chainring will be 42t. Thanks :okay:

Are there two Deore M6000 derailleurs? I'm surprised as being MTB should be long. If there are two either should be okay but check on the Shimano site, bearing in mind the specs can be exceeded by a small margin.

Think the shortest cage will do the business. Capacity required (NB a 1x) is 25t.
Have no idea whether it will manage a 36t (jgi - specs), but that's not what the OP asked (and cage length irrelevant).

still scratching my noggin  am i correct in thinking the long cage can take up more 'slack' and for my purposes - 11-36t cassette 42t chainring the medium cage would be most suited.

Doesn't matter what front cog you have on a 1x you only need to worry about the range on the back, as long as that is in the capacity then you're good

According to specifications,

medium cage
  • capacity: 41T (Medium GS version),
  • Maximum Large Sprocket: 42T
and long cage
capacity 43t
Maximum large sprocket 36t

This is from the Spa Cycles website...
DescriptionWide link Shadow design Dyna-Sys 10-speed top normal Deore rear derailleur
....
GS - Compatible with 42T low sprocket (single chainring)
SGS - Compatible with 36T low sprocket (double/triple chainring)
So if you're going 1x it's the GS medium cage model you want (RD-M6000-GS info on Shimano product page)
