Just looking for some help since I'm pretty newb when it comes to components.

I have a bike with full Dura Ace 9000 groupset with standard 53/39 chainset, its a very light bike at just 6.2 kg but I was wondering about getting a compact crank (50/34) for any tough climbing rides I will probably do next season.

So my question is since I may just do the occasional tough climb could I buy an Ultegra 50/34 chainset? and would it work fine with the rest of my dura ace components as the ultegra is so much cheaper and I've been told there isn't a massive difference between the two groupsets.

What ratios are on the cassette you're using? If you get one with two more teeth on the large sprocket it will give you just as low a bottom gear and you won't have that awful jump between the chainrings on a compact. And it will be cheaper.

As per what both the above posters said, it will work fine, but a different cassette maybe with a 28 or 32 cassette depending on what you have now is the cheaper option. You could also just put an Ultegra or even 105 cassette on as its aesthetically the same and much cheaper even if a few grammes heavier. You also don't lose the beauty of your Dura Ace chainset.

You can just change the chainrings then it wont look daft with the ultergra chainset

I have a 32t cassette working with my DA rd - just it rumbles a bit on the 32t - it is better to use the Ultegra medium rd though. It will depend on being able to set B screw properly
