Shimano chain humiliation

Shimano 9spd chain, the type requiring the special connecting pin - where you plier off the surplus.

Broke it, cleaned it, ready to rejoin, but I can't get the old pin out.

Have a chain tool better than the multi-tool combo variety, but still portable and small.

Frustrating thing is I've split and re-joined Shimano chains in the dim and distant with chain tools comparable to current one.

So what have I forgotten?

Pliers to remove old pin from the half outer link that it's still in?

You're not trying to break the chain at a point where it's been broken before are you? Only break and rejoin the chain once on any link

Install SRAM power link to facilitate future breaking and rejoining of chain?

use a combination of your chain tool/gloves/pliers.

Hold the chain tool with the gloves and use the pliers to turn the handle. I've had to use this approach before.

Maybe I've misunderstood but can't you put the chain in the chain tool, the other way round, leaving the pin in and push it back through to join the chain?

:excl: put the new pin in from the other side and it'll push the old pin out?

How old is the chain tool - my old chain tool will not push a pin out of a 9sp chain - the pin on the tool is too big

Yeah I got caught like that when going to a nine speed chain. The tool my Dad bought back in the 1950s worked on single speed, 5 6,7 and 8 speed chains but not on nine!

I don't know you buy a decent tool and fifty years later it's obsolete! Makes my Yorkshire heart cringe to waste money like that!:cry:
