Dragged an old Claud Butler out the shed last night me lads going to use it to commute to colledge and back looks like the rear mech hanger has took a battering me mates gonna heat and re straighten the mech hanger

Whole bike needs a good bit of TLC but the chain to me is not worth trying to bring back to life

Ive got a spare shimano 10 speed chain the bike has a campag veloce rear cassette and front chainset is it wise to use the shimano chain or should I go to the LBS and buy new?

Check, but I think there used to be two different 10sp chain widths 6.3mm (campy) and 5.9mm (Shimano) but manufacturers like KMC and SRAM have realised its better just to produce a 5.9mm chain that fits both systems.

OK HLAB but I forgot to mention the campag is 9 speed will this also have a bearing?

I wouldn't try to run a 10spd chain on a 9spd cassette, if that's what you are suggesting. Just buy a new 9spd chain...

I suppose you could try it and see if it works but I doubt it will be very smooth if it does work.

definitely wont work. you need a 9 speed chain

Also, new chain unlikely to work on cassette if its well worn.

Not saying i'm right, but look at the logic...
Chainrings are usually 9 and 10 speed. You can use them on either system.
Cassettes tend to have the same thickness sprockets, its the spacers that are specific and they dont affect the chain.
What you're interested in is the inside measurement of the chain, not the outside. I believe the inside measurement is the same.
You therefor (theroretically) could use a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed setup, but not a 9 speed chain on a 10 speed.
As for using a Shimano chain on a Campag setup, i'm running that on a 10 speed setup right now, no problem whatsoever.

Although higher speed sprockets are thinner and the internal width of derailleur chains do get narrower (and don't remain constant at 3/32" beyond 8 speed e.g. many if not most 9 speed chain internal width are 11/128"), the difference is so tiny that gbb is right and you should have no problem using a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed system, since 9 speed sprockets are still considerably thinner than the internal width of 10 speed chains.

It will work...perfectly.

I stand corrected. Will a 9spd chain work on a 10spd setup then? If so, it kind of makes buying the correct speed chain a bit pointless, if you can get cheaper lower speed alternatives. Marketing, I suppose...

A nine speed chain will be to wide for the cassette spacing on ten speeds.

Chains will work down the range but not up, if you see what I mean.
