Shimano brake lever compatibility (Alivio st-mc12)

How can I find out if brake levers are compatible with V-Brakes or Cantilevers? We've got a set of Alivio st-mc12 levers, which according to Google date from 1994 at the earliest, which suggests they probably fit Cantis. The the internet isn't confirming one way or the other which is strange, as this would seem to be the most important detail.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Also, is there a table or compatibility search engine somewhere so I don't have to keep asking the same question?

Alivio suggests they are from an MTB so likely for V brakes.
Don't know you can tell definitely , you can only suck it and see.
Most levers for flat bars are going to be for mountain bikes as numerically not too many cantis were fitted to hybrids, most were used on road bikes.
