I attempted to remove a square taper BB from my Globe commuting bike using a standard shimano BB tool (genuine Shimano tool) and it wouldn't fit!!!

Basically, on the drive side, after the square bit there was this huge 'circular thing' (think big fat washer) fixed to the axle and the BB tool wouldn't slide over it to engage into the teeth as normal. The hole in the centre of the tool wasn't quite wide enough to allow the tool to go over this thing (I've never seen one like it before).

What can I do? Would perhaps a Park Tool BB tool have a slightly wider diameter hole in the centre?

All I can say it what a stupid design.

I haven't managed to remove it yet but i'm guessing that it isn't - otherwise I'm sure the tool would fit.

I removed the non-drive side. It is defo the correct tool.

I had an older splined tool (shimano) that wouldn't remove some of the newer stuff - my case was the splines are deeper now and the old tool wouldn't engage properly.

It could be that the tool hasn't enough 'hollow' to go past the washer - try another tool ?

yes, the hollow bit in the middle of the tool is too small - newer shimano tools have a larger hole in the middle, but my tool is quite old (almost 20 years).

Borrowed a mates tool which is identical but has a larger hole - fits fine.
