Shimano Alfine and chain

I need to change my chain and more than likely my sproket on my shimano 8 speed alfine set up.

I can't seem to find the definitive answer to what chain I need, this is my second chain and apparently the one that came with the bike was a BMX chain, the LBS put a single speed chain on but when I look on the Shimano site under Alfine they only mention 9 speed chains, so is it single speed or 9 speed?

I always thought all chains were the same just longer and better quality

Depends on the sprocket. Shimano 3 spline sprockets are 3/32" so are good for all single to 9 speed chains, while SA sprockets are typically 1/8" needing single speed chains.

If you want to save weight something like the KMC X9SL hollow pin will be around 150g lighter than a single speed chain, but at the expense of durability. An 8 speed chain would be a reasonable compromise.

KMC Z610 will do fine. As will any 1/2" x 3/32" chain from, an LBS or Halfords, for instance.
