Hi all,

I've had two Shimano Acera M360 Top Swing front mechs now just cos I knew it would be compatible but they are so stiff sometimes I have to use my whole hand to shift it especially into the largest front cog.

I've replaced the cables and outers both times and the mech itself does feel very stiff even just in my hands before fitting.

Would I be better off with a conventional mech?

If you need a 'topswing' front mech due to the cabling then you're stuck with them.

I need top pull but I'm not sure of the pros and cons of top swing or bottom.

Could leverage be better on another design of mech is what I think I want to know.

The 'higher' up the Shimano range you go the 'lighter' the action is. I've only got one bike that needs a 'topswing' mech due to the gear cable route (Saracen Blitz with the cables running along the top tube) and that has a Deore mech but the bike runs 'trigger shifters' so the effort isn't too bad.
