Hi

Long term I plan on upgrading to a full Ultegra 6800 11spd groupset but I was wondering if it's at all possible to do it in bits. Namely, would an Ultegra 6800 11spd front mech work with Tiagra chainset and shifters. I know the official Shimano line is a flat no but I've seen some suggestions that it's possible as long as you use an 11spd chain as the internal dimensions of the links are the same.

If it's possible the plan would be to get the front mech (and chain) then a bit later the crank set. That way I can at least break the upgrade down into more affordable chunks. But on the other hand it's got to all work together to be worth it!!

Cheers

Next year 105 becomes the current Ultegra ... http://road.cc/content/news/115191-shimano-105-goes-11-speed

Literally just looks like they are just putting '105' on all the Ultegra parts.

you'll be able to get that 105 groupset new in a years time for £300 or less with a cheeky discount code. ( I just bought current 105 gs for £270)

I'd just put a bit away each month and buy that.

Mixing and matching is never reeaaally ideal.

I'll let a more technical expert confirm, as ive never done it but I can't foresee a problem, the front mech is just a dumb unit which is pulled to shove the chain onto a bigger chain ring. At a guess though you're chainrings/ cassette cogs would be too wide for an 11sp chain and you'd have to use a 10sp until yo ungraded them.

I have just upgraded to Ultegra 6800 from a 105/Tiagra mix. The difference is great - even I notice it and I am not a fully fledged out and out cyclist. From my experience it is cheaper to buy the groupset in one go rather than bits and pieces. Not a lot though - about £50 to £60. However be careful as one groupset I purchased online was not original Shimano equipment and so I sent it back. As has been said the new 105 is due to be launched in June, so you may want to wait for that to come out as it will be a bit cheaper than Ultegra 6800
