My friend has a new road bike with a compact crankset, but possibly 105 triple shifters. How do you set up the front derailleur correctly to adapt to this? I haven't looked at them yet, so can't comment more, (I've been nominated to go around and set his bike up for him) but he seems to think that the shifters are triples. I've heard about the 'trimming' aspect of shifters, but am not entirely certain of how they work. Is there an easy way to tell if the shifters are double, or triple?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

My allez has a compact and the front mech has 3 settings so you can use both chainrings with and rear cog. The middle selection stops the chain rubbing on the mech. Possibly this is the case on your mates

And some triple shifters have more than three clicks - but you still use them on a compact chain ring. You can "lock-out" some of the clicks by setting the H & L limit screws appropriately and then adjust the cable tension to find the smoothest shifting.

That's exactly how it is, Kiwi. The second, smaller shift is a trim function, as you say. Set the bike up for my mate, he's chuffed  Thanks for the advice, guys!
