Hi,

I'm looking to move from a 34/50 shimano 105 compact to the 39/53 shimano 105 double.

I've been asked to check by my local bike store whether it will be compatible with my bottom bracket

I've got the Cube Agree GTC Pro 2012 model - http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Cube-Agree-GTC-Pro-Compact-2012-Road-Bike_49373.htm

It has the press fit bottom bracket

Will this be compatible with the Shimano 105 Black Double 5700/5750 10 Spd Chainset - see link - http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/ro...-double-5700-5750-10-spd-chainset/shimchar247

Hoping I can pick just this up and a new chain

Will keep my 12-28 cassette

Shouldn't it be your LBS telling you what is and is not compatible rather than sending you away to gather that info for them?

You'd think. Ironically, this was the place I bought the above bike from.

You need to change your LBS first, then let the new one change your chainset. Times are hard on the high street and any good shop will welcome taking on a dis-satisfied customer from elsewhere.

Why dont you just change the chainrings if the crank is ok or better still change your cassette to a 11-25 would give you similiar gears with the compact!?

If you have the 5750 chainset at the moment the 5700 should fit fine. Why not buy it from Ribble and fit it yourself, and to hell with the unhelpful LBS? Or ..... were you going to buy it from Ribble and ask the LBS to fit it? That might explain their attitude.

The BCDs of the two are different - 50/34 = 110mm, 52/39 = 130mm

You can get replacement rings at 110 BCD that would take you to 52/39 - e.g. http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b2s149p294 and http://www.spacycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m2b2s149p293. Or maybe something else with a change of cassette as suggested earlier. Maybe 50/36 with a cassette at 11-25. Would be a lot cheaper than a new chainset, and no worries about the BB.
Silly me  - yes you are spot on. I have only ever gone the other way - wanting to fit smaller chainrings to a double, and then the BCD becomes very limiting to choice. Agree - changing the cassette would be the simplest and cheapest approach.
