Shimano 105 cassette grief - lockring binding on wheel

I gave my brother in law a pair of shimano wheels, he's having problems putting his 10sp 105 cassette on it. I checked that he put the spacer/washer on, etc. When he tightens the lockring it binds on the inside.

I previously had a 10sp 105 cassette on the wheel before with no bother.

Any ideas ?

Might not need the washer, I don't need it on mine, just a thought.

The old 9 speed freehubs needed a spacer for 10 spd cassetttes - it's not very thick but must have been needed.

is that little thin 'spacer' that slides onto the freehub first still needed with 10 speed 105 hubs? I put it on and it seems fine, but should I remove it?

Apparently if it fits on - use it.
