My road bike has a 9 speed Shimano cassette, and i'm thinking of upgrading those clunky Tiagra shifters.
I notice most shifters seem to be 10 speed, anyone know if they are compatible?
I suspect not, don't really want to upgrade the cassette thereby adding even more frightening expense.

The answer is no - the shift per click is slightly smaller. You would also have to get new cranks or file the existing ones down as the 10spd front shift is .5mm less.

BTW - I personally wouldn't touch the 105 sti levers with a proverbial bargepole as the 5600 left hand lever seems very fragile and he 5700 has to prove itself..

Thanks for that, looks like the clunky Tiagra's will have to do...

You would need to replace the cassette and chain - cost around £50 combined.

The only other option seems to be Sora 3400,but can't find any proper reviews. Better than Tiagra? No idea.

Nope. It's (in ascending order) Sora, Tiagra, 105, Ultegra, Dura Ace. I've just bought 105 shifters to replace Tiagra. Tiagra is ok, does the job. but has no finesse about it. As you say - clunky. And the wee plastic pointer thing telling you which gear you are in is naff.

Thanks, that's helpful. My Giant bike is 3yrs old,so i don't know what model Tiagra shifters they are. Maybe the latest version is better than
mine, for £150 plus you would hope so. The indicator thing isn't great no,just a rough guide. The travel on the levers is stupidly wide and
vague,hence looking for something better.
