Hi,

bit of a cycling newbie so apologies for ignorance.

I bought a bike on ebay a few months back which generally is great but has tri bars on. I am looking to swap these for drop bars and will need to chnage shifters / brakes etc aswell. I am looking to buy secondhand ( perhaps Campag mirage?) but am not sure exactly what shifters are required ( i.e 9 or 10 speed).

I have appended the bike spec below :

GIANT OCR frame size LARGE - Compact road - cane creek internal headset.Really smart colour - looks great.,CARBON Kinesis forks,CARBON Profile design tri extentions,CARBON Profile design RAZOR seat post,PRO MAX stem,LOOK pedals,Selle Italia ' Nova ' saddle,Profile design aluminium base bars F22 arm rests ( plenty of adjustment),Dia Compe bar end brake levers,CAMPAGNOLO ,Campagnolo Bar end levers,Campagnolo new RECORD chainset ( 10 speed) 172.5 length cranks 53 / 39 rings,Campagnolo CHORUS bottom bracket,Campagnolo CHORUS ( 10 speed) front changer - frame fitting,Campagnolo VELOCE rear mech,Campagnolo rear hub,Campagnolo Cassette ( 9 speed),Campagnolo brake calipers,Wheels - rear Campagnolo hub on MAVIC Open Pro rim - front Alex Rims DA28 radial 28 spoke on Scott hubAny help would be really appreciated. Also if anybody can recommend a good place to buy said items that would be great.

cheers.

however many sprockets (cogs ) there are on the rear cassette, that's what speed (right hand, rear) shifter you need. If it's got a campag cassette and campag rear mech, you will need a campag shifter.
Front shifters are listed as for either 'double' or 'triple' (or compatible with both) but are also listed as 9 speed or 10 speed, this is just basically so that the width of the front mech is optimal according to the width of the chain.

Shifters are normally sold as a set (LH/front and RH/rear), so assuming you have 10 sprockets on your cassette, you should go for a set of campag, 10 speed, double, shifters. e.g. http://www.dotbike.com/ProductsP2010.aspx?A=3&TRACK=DPL
(I dont' know what 'ergopower' is so can't recommend for or against it, or what that lever on the side is/whether it's like sora or not, cos i don't use campag, so maybe somebody else can fill in on that front)

well yes, probably, but check that what it's listed as is the same as what it actually is. Retailers can and do change specifications so just count your sprockets to be sure.
It seems like there's a mix of 9 and 10 speed stuff in the spec you posted, most stuff is 10 but the cassette (and therefore presumably your current shifters) is 9. You could obviously upgrade to 10 by just getting a new 10 speed cassette aswell, this might also give you longer before you find any individual spare parts you may need in the future to be deprecated.
remember, most important thing is that cassette and shifters are the same speed rating.
