Evening, may seem like a daft question,

If there are 8 clicks on my shifter does that mean I should have a rear cassette with 9 sprockets and if its not essential then is it possible to add a cassette with 9 sprockets?

Reason I ask is the my for some reason I had it in my head that my bike was 9 speed so bought a 9 speed campagnolo cassette and chain for it but when I came to actually look at it there are I ly 8 sprockets but the shifter does seem to click 8 times and as there would only ever be 7 movements that makes me think.

Also the cassette I got has a lock ring but the cassette on the bike doesn't seem to, does anyone know the 8 speed lock ring set up?

Long winded I know but thanks for reading.

Cheers
Tom

8 clicks on the right hand means that it is a 9 speed shifter.

Campagnolo did do a Mirage 9 speed cassette/freehub which fitted to the Mirage hub in one piece - ie there was no need for a lockring because the sprockets were permanently fixed to the freehub.

I would start by dismantling the rear hub and see what you have.

Just checked again and It says 9 speed on the shifters, that's why I thought it was 9 speed, wondered how I got that in my head, and there are definatley 8 sprockets, I'm Not going mad lol!

If its built to the free hub doesn't that mean serious dismantling or a new wheel with freehub?

Thank Pete.

I'm not sure you can still buy the old one piece freehub/cassettes and Campagnolo made some minor design changes to the hub every other year so the hub might not take a 9spd cassette.

Has the hub got any markings on it? Is it campagnolo?.

haven't had chance to look at the actual hub yet as i am at work but after a bit of a search i found this on that sheldon brown webstite thing:

''Campagnolo Cassette Systems

Campagnolo 8-speed cassettes used a slightly different spline pattern from the current pattern used for 9-and 10-speed systems.
8-speed Campagnolo cassettes will not fit on newer "9-speed" and "10-speed" hubs.
9- and 10-speed Campagnolo cassettes will not fit on 8-speed hubs.
It is theoretically possible to upgrade Campagnolo 8-speed hubs with newer cassette bodies, but in practice the parts don't generally seem to be available.''

Which i think might mean i need to buy:
http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/ro...-rear-record-9-10-11-spd-road-hub/camphubr890

which at that price may be worth just buying these:
http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/ro...-black-white-clincher-wheels-pair/campwhfr627
if they include the hubs?

and fitting the 9 speed kmc chain and 9 speed miche cassette i purchased from ribble.

or am I completely off track there?

I would have a look at your hub first but it is probably pretty old and unless it is a Record hub it may not be worth messing about with.

The Khamsins are the entry level Campagnolo but are decent enough and will probably be l lot better than your existing wheels.

They come ready to roll - just slot on the cassette you bought and away you go! Make sure you specify the Campagnolo option.

I'm thinking of changing the wheels anyway and entry level is fine by me as I'm only entry level anyway ha ha.

I'll have a look at it this weekend then.

Cheers for the help Pete.

All I can see where the spikes attach to the hub is "shimano 600"

That's a Shimano block - so it will be a Shimano hub.

Can you check that you have Campagnolo Shifters and Campagnolo groupset or is it Shimano?

Sounds like the previous owner has simply stuck a Shimano hubbed wheel on the bike to sell it:wacko:. Does it actually shift properly?

Anyway -you have a 9spd Campagnolo groupset so you need a pair of Campagnolo 9/10spd wheels. (The hub can take both 9 or 10 speed cassettes).

Not properly but it does shift, sometimes misses cogs or needs and extra little nudge on the shifter to engage or even shift up 2 then down 1.

I thought it was just me.

New wheels it is then.

Thanks very much.
