Me and the family are heading off to the caravan in Bridlington tomorrow... and it was my bright idea that I would cycle there... the whole 100 miles.

Now I've never cycled 100 miles before and especially not on flat ground as you may all well know, Sheffield has 4.5million hills (slight exaggeration).

I'll update this with how I get on.

good luck - sounds like my old family holidays - Wath to Ulrome, then spend all my money in the slots in Brid! You should be fine - I'd guess it's all flatter than a flat thing for most of the way

I've done the route and it's pretty much the same amount of elevation as there is on a 20 mile ride around the peaks which I normally do but I suppose with riding on the flat there'll be no restbite whatsoever.

Looking forward to it, I just hope the weather improves that's all.

Well that was a ride to forget.

I set off at 11:30 with the intention of riding from Sheffield to Bridlington before turning back and heading for Skipsea to make up the 100 miles. It was cold but not raining... yet. That didn't last long though and the rain soon started to fall, you know, that fine rain that soaks you through.

I battled on and looked at my Garmin. 15 miles. "Is that it?" The only thought that I had in my head was that I had another 85 miles of this to endure.

I managed to reach 45 miles where I took a brief stop to take on an energy gel and a small toilet break. Let's just say that it was numb. Not a nice experience.

I plodded along but there was no respite [Thanks Sara_H] with the flat ride. Something I'm not used to at all. I'm more accustomed to the undulating terrain and getting a rest on the descents. No such rest here.

There was one small hill I had to contend with and a Cat 4 (according to Strava) at that too. I made it to the top and started the small descent. BANG! Puncture. :cursing:. Luckily I had a spare tube and 18 minutes later and a few more swear words I was back on the road again.

Time and light certainly wasn't on my side and instead of making the 100 miles I had to cut the ride short and head to Skipsea.

I made it. 86 miles from start to finish and 6 hours and 30 minutes after I set off. Freezing, cold and shaking after my worst ride of my cycling career. The only positive to take from it was the accolade of my longest ride yet and the pint of cider and warm shower which was awaiting me.

I definitely want to give this ride another go but when the temperature increases... by around 20 degrees.

You can view the ride here.

Good ride Mapster, was it an Easterly wind ? at this time of year the Easterly's are bloody cold, next time turn off the A614 just before the M62 and go through Airmyn village rejoining the A614 just before the river, this saves going into Goole.

Thanks for that. I had planned to make a stop in Goole which is why I headed there. I did find that I crossed the motorway countless times. Was relying on the route that I'd programmed into my Garmin but I would definitely change the route next time.

As far as the wind goes to be honest there wasn't much. It was just a long hard slog.

Blimey, well done! It was horrible yesterday - I only just made it round Graves Park with the dog!

By the way - I think the word you're looking for is respite!

Cheers for that Sara. It was a tough ride but when you're 40 miles from home then there's not much you can do other than carry on. I'm glad for doing it but I was near breaking point during the ride.

Well done for persisting Mapster - 86 miles is a long ride in anyone's book. And for what it's worth I prefer 'restbite', a very useful coinage, so well done for that too.
Rest bite does seem to fit the bill, in fact, weren't little chef cafe's renamed Rest Bite at one point?

Nice ride there Mapster, always good to throw in a journey instead of taking the car/train. I slogged from Bolton to Sheffield to attend a fancy dress party a few years back and rode home the following day - great training but harsh if your not lucky with the weather.
