Isn't it possible to test changes to the forum software while it is live without us seeing what you are up to? I mean, to put the forum into some kind of test mode where we see the old version and only you see the new version.

I suppose he could host the website from localhost and do changes there and then transfer it to the main site but it seems like more trouble than it's worth. It's fairly easy to revert back (from my experience with vBulletin) anyway.
