Sharp pain in knee and buttock/lower back

Just today I noticed i'm occasionally getting a sudden sharp pain in the left knee and left buttock/lower back, both pains at exactly the same time. This happens mainly when putting a bit of power down. The only thing changed on the bike recently was a stem change from 100mm to 90mm.

Could this be a saddle height issue? Not going to get chance to experiment till after the jubilee hols now.

This.

does the pain radiate from your tailbone and shoot through the buttock and down? if so most likely sciatica. it can be caused by a number of reasons, a slipped disc or narrowing of the spinal column or in some cases the piriformis muscle pressing on the sciatic nerve in most people its caused by a strain in the piriformis or the nerve itself. this could have been caused when you changed your stem, you may have strained the muscle.
see your doc who will most likely want to refer you to a physio, if the problem persists they may want to check you for herniated discs etc but do mention your cycling to the physio.
i had sciatica for a while after a crash i'd had and thankfully it was just a strain rather then anything more serious underlying it.

Could be that as you've reduced the stem length by 10mm you are now sitting more upright than before and thereby putting more weight on to your pelvis area which could be compressing a nerve. Either go back to the longer stem or try raising your saddle very slightly - 2-3mm to tip your weight forward more.

Been out on the bike today after raising the saddle by a few millimetres. Didn't have any pain at all on a longer ride than that where I was getting the pain.

Will put it down to that for the time being, and will see the doc if it recurs.
