On my right foot, at the base about 1" towards the outside of my heel. It catches me out at times with a sharp pain shooting upwards towards the ankle. It started about a week ago and only hurts when my foot is pointing up . Now, I understand if it progresses and becomes worse, to go to the GP. What I'm asking is, how likely is it that my foot needs to stretch out and I just need to be doing some specific exercise?
I don't do any other exercise other than walking and cycling so it's highly likely I need to stretch out after a ride. Advice regarding good stretching exercises would be very helpful. Thanks.

A few years ago I was still running heavily and noticed a sharp pain under my right heel, which I put down to bruising as I'd been running barefoot along the beach just prior to noticing it.

I rested up for a bit, but it continued to get worse and I ended up at the doc, with a series of Cortisone injections for Plantar Fasciitis.

Hope this isn't what you've got, as mine took nearly a year to shift.

Me too, Fingers crossed yours stays away. The odd thing with my heel is, it reacts painfully to certain stretch movements which catch me out and then it stays sore for some time. Unless it gets worse I think I'll give it a few more weeks to settle before I take a trip to the docs.

You might have trodden on something and have a tiny object in there. I once had the smallest sliver of glass imaginable embeded in my foot and normal walking, cycling etc., was no problem but the slightest twist in the wrong direction and the pain was excruciating. I don't wish to be the harbinger of doom, but it took ages to work it's way out! I'd say get along to the doctor so he or she can have a proper look rather than us second guess!!

Currently sat here with my foot wrapped up in an ice pack to try and calm my bout of Plantar Fasciitis.

This website gives some helpful advices and demonstrates some beneficial stretches to try and loosen up the pain http://bettehall.wordpress.com/2007/01/12/plantar-fasciitis-treatment/
What a lot we are eh  Hope you have some luck with easing the pain and the whole plantar- fascilitis thing goes completely before too long!
For me, I have noticed that the sharp pain can only happen when my leg is out straight and I bend my foot upwards which is why I wondered if it was coming from some tightness somewhere in my leg.
