Is it possible? If so how would i go about it?

I'm considering swapping my triple out for an ultegra compact if it isn't too much hard work or if i can keep the shifters the same.

Its the st-4500 brifter which according to shimano is a double/triple lever

I think that you simply would only click the lever once to drop a cog and not a third time. I am not sure if the indexing is the same as the pull ratio maybe different. Best call a lbs.

It's doable on the 4500 model - you simply adjust the limit screws to restrict movement to just two rings.

It's straightforward - the only slight complication being whether you use the first series of clicks (ie the old little and middle rings) or last series ( ie middle and big ring).

Shimano recommend you use the first option - so you just set the limiter to stop the front mech overshifting beyond the big ring AND REMEMBER NOT TO FORCE THE LEVER AS IT WILL SOON BREAK IF YOU TRY TO SHIFT AGAINST THE LIMITER.

This.

Can't this be avoided by setting it up in such a way that the "null" shifter click is the click that would otherwise move the chain onto the granny ring?
