Does anyone know of any friendly place where I can get my new bike properly set up? It's arrived today in a box, in many different pieces. Just wondering if any of you "York-ies" can recommend anywhere? If not, I'll just go to Halfrauds.

Aaargh... NO! Don't take it to Halfrauds, the kids in there will wreck it for you.

You really need to learn to set up the bike yourself. It isn't very difficult and doing it will give you the confidence to tinker with it and get it running and set up perfectly for yourself. If you were in Lancashire I'd offer you a proper fettling session. Keep asking around unil you find someone, send a PM to Arch who posts on here and might be able to help.

Hello!

Hmm, I've never had to get a bike set up, having always had someone on hand to build it for me.

My first instinct would be Cycleworks, on Lawrence Street, just because they are probably the friendliest shop, and I think, a co-op. No idea what they'll charge though. There's also Cycle Heaven, Bishopthorpe Road, Bob Trotters on Lord Mayor's Walk, and Fulford Cycles, on Fulford Road, a bit further out than the others. Probably worth ringing round and asking if they'll do it, and for how much.

Another thought is Bike Rescue, on Terry Avenue (down by the river, on a little industrial unit). They recycle and sell bikes, but I think they also take in servicing jobs, so they might be able to help - it might depend on how busy they are, they are mostly volunteers and so on. Drop by or give them a call.

And once you've got your bike set up, keep an eye on the events section, we try and get a ride out once a month or so.

If you want any advice on good routes around, or out of, town, ask away here, or PM me...

PS, I'd offer a fettling session, but I'm not really qualified - I can keep my bikes together, but wouldn't be confident about sending anyone else off on a bike without it being checked over...;)

Thanks for all the advice guys, I think I'll probably put it together myself, following the instructions (which are all in French ) then get a bike shop to check it over and try to ensure my positioning is correct. Need to get a track pump too

Doing it myself is going ok so far, apart from the seat post tightener thing has snapped under tightening, so will go get a new one of those later.

Thanks for the offer of a check Spandex, I'll let you know if I need to take you up on it

Take up Spandex's offer, he's a top bloke and will do a better and cheaper job than York Cycle Works.

Right. So, Coffee, cakes and.....

WTF did you do to it:ohmy: I have never seen that before. Just to let you know I do have a FULL workshop with kitchen(ish), lounge, surround sound, wifi and the best thing is the New lighting that we have just had fitted so I can see what I am doing:tongue:

My price is ?

Just bring some beer over.

Own strength fail. All I'm going to say is that it's French, what do you expect?

I'm picking a spare one up tomorrow, so hopefully everything will be bolted together - then can arrange a visit to the workshop of dreams to get everything checked and sorted

The length of time it's taken me to buy this damn thing, then put it together, think I've gone off the idea of riding it.
